How to Correctly Pin a Boutonniere on a Suit for a Wedding | Dreams Photography

A beautifully pinned boutonniere adds a refined finishing touch to any groom or groomsman’s suit. As a Sydney wedding photographer, I’ve helped countless couples prepare before the ceremony. Surprisingly, pinning a boutonniere correctly is something many people struggle with—so here is a simple, reliable guide to get it right every time.
The boutonniere sits on the left lapel, above the heart. Most jackets have a buttonhole at the top of the lapel—sometimes functional, sometimes decorative. Even if sewn shut, it marks the correct placement.

Position the boutonniere at the top of the left lapel. Hold it so the flower faces outward and sits just below the tie knot.

Insert the pin from behind the lapel so it remains hidden. Push it toward the stem with a gentle upward angle.
Guide the pin through the thickest part of the stem. Avoid piercing petals—this damages the flower.
Angle the pin downward and push it back into the underside of the lapel. This creates a loop that firmly holds the flower.

Adjust the flower so it sits upright, flat, and symmetrical. You may use a second pin if extra stability is needed. alt Final adjustments

Before the ceremony, do a final check. Ensure the boutonniere is straight, secure, and fresh. A well-pinned boutonniere enhances your suit and looks stunning in photos—helping you look your best on your wedding day.
